Study Group Description: In the past several decades much as been learned about changes in our endocrine system as we age. Many controversies exist about whether such changes require treatment (growth hormone, DHEA, testosterone, estrogen, etc.). What are the risks/benefits of therapy?

PERIPHERAL ARTERIAL DISEASE
or “Is that why my feet are cold?”

Study Group Description: The study group leader will discuss the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of disease of the peripheral arterial system, including peripheral arterial occlusive disease (blockage of the circulation to arms and legs), abdominal aortic aneurysm and carotid disease (blockage of circulation to the brain) and its association with stroke. Common misconceptions about arterial disease will be emphasized.

WHAT THEY FORGOT TO TELL YOU WHEN YOU STARTED TO STUDY HISTORY

Study Group Description: In his position as a history professor, Stephen, started each of his classes with a little exposé of things often forgotten when talking about history - things that if remembered often times make things more understandable. Stephen notes that there are many pitfalls; such as terms that are never defined - "they" for some reason assume that everyone just knows these things.

BEIJING AND THE 2008 OLYMPICS

Study Group Description: Given Chinese restrictions on public demonstrations in or concerning Tibet and continuing Chinese support of genocide in Darfur, will the Olympics be the huge success that the Chinese want or will the games become a public relations disaster? What are the current events in Beijing? The study group leader will attempt to answer these and more questions in this open discussion with participants.

AM I HAVING A STROKE?

Study Group Description: This study group will discuss the importance of the Early Diagnosis of impending Stroke. The role and promise of recent advances in Stroke treatment will be considered. Visual aids will be used to demonstrate pertinent anatomy and pathology so that participants may better understand the role of risk factors that lead to Stroke and resulting loss of neurological functions. The goal is to be able to learn the importance of recognizing the early warning signs of Stroke so that timely diagnosis and effective treatment may be obtained. Participants will be welcome to ask questions and all attempts will be made to minimize “doctorese” in favor of “plain English” in the discussion.

FILM DISCUSSION GROUP

Study Group Description: This group will meet every other Tuesday beginning May 13th. The group will choose films, view them in a local theater or in the classroom, and then discuss them. If appropriate, other video or documentary materials will be used. The group will also have flexibility to revise the meeting schedule as it chooses. Study group members will be asked to participate in the film selection, view the film and participate in the discussions. Study group members will also be asked to “take turns” in leading the discussions.

As time permits, we will follow the film with group discussion.

AMERICA’S REACTION TO ISLAM’S MOVE INTO THE WESTERN WORLD

It raises many interesting and provocative questions about America’s role in world affairs and the on-going problems in the Middle East.
