Study Group Description:‘Journeys’ is an ongoing study group that offers OLLI members an opportunity to share their travel experiences with others who enjoy traveling, whether actually or vicariously. During these sessions, we learn about destinations and evaluate the various ways our travelers get there.

Session 1: Around the Horn with Elderhostel with Joanna Brunso (jomcbrunso@yahoo.com). From January through mid-march Elderhostel offers a program called “Exploring the Southern Cone,” in which participants travel on a Holland American ocean liner from Rio de Janiero, circumnavigate Cape Horn, visit several ports and finally end the trip in Santiago, Chile. Joanna made this trip in February 2009. She will show her photos taken during the trip, recount some of the information she learned along the way and evaluate her trip with Elderhostel. Joanna has traveled extensively for most of her adult life.
Session 2: Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro with Gary Meinert (gkmeinert@unac.com). On a mountain-climbing trip organized by Wilderness Travel Co. of San Diego, Gary was one of 13 who climbed the western breach of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Kenya. Two in the party were women; four were friends from Wisconsin. Through his slide presentation, Gary will relate the beauty and the difficulties of the trip. Gary is a retired owner of a wholesale industrial supply business in Wisconsin. Prior to Mount Kilimanjaro he had climbed one other mountain, Mt. Vesuvius, when he was much younger.
Session 3: Semester at Sea in the Caribbean and Amazon Basin with Bernie Kuehn (bkuehn@cox.net). Last December Bernie and his wife signed on for the Semester at Sea program operated by the University of Virginia. He will relate his experience on his visit to eight Caribbean Islands and the Amazon Basin with this educational program. Bernie was born in Germany, came to this country as a boy and during his career spent 40 years with the Federal Government, for which he traveled extensively.
Session 4: Dubai and Beyond: The Arabian Persian Gulf with Marge Hanley (mwhanley@prodigy.net). In November 2008 Marge cruised with Elderhostel along the Arabian Persian Gulf to visit the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman. She will show her DVD of this journey. During her career as a newspaper journalist, Marge had the opportunity to do extensive foreign travel; and those experiences ignited her continuing passion for learning about other cultures.
Session 5: Vacation as a Volunteer with Earthwatch in Mongolia with Kathleen Priebe (kathiep5@juno.com). Kathleen is a retired computer scientist who has lived and worked in the Middle East and Europe. She will tell about her life and work for two weeks as a volunteer with Earthwatch in the conservation of the rare breed of argali sheep in Mongolia. There was lots of fun experiencing another culture as well as lots of hard work.
Session 6: Costa Rica with Richard and Kathy McKay (rkmckay@gmail.com). Having lived in Arizona since 1974 and traveled extensively in the western United States, Alaska and Canada, Richard and Kathy decided to broaden their horizons by traveling to Costa Rica in January 2009. Costa Rica is a natural paradise with a stable democratic government that values the country's ecology. Its friendly, gracious people are eager to share the beauty of their country with visitors. With cloud forests, active volcanoes, jungle-canopy tours, river cruises, hot springs, plantations producing coffee, bananas and pineapple as well as exotic plants and birds, Costa Rica has much to offer nature lovers and birders. The McKays are pleased to share their 800-mile, coast-to-coast, mountain, river, valley and beach tour of that charming country.
Session 7: A Canadian Canoe Trip with David Colpitts (dwccon@telusplanet.net). To honor the contributions of David Thompson, an explorer and map maker, to Canadian history, David Colpitts participated in the 2,000-mile canoe trip together with more than nine canoe teams on the commemorative trip honoring the bicentennial of the explorer. David will relate his experience with a PowerPoint presentation of this dramatic trip.
Session 8: A British Christmas with Stephen Stillwell (wilding@uta.edu). Stephen has spent four of the last five Christmas holidays in Great Britain. During these trips, he stayed on farms just outside the Welsh town of Llanbedr Pont Steffan, at a manor house in Somerton and on a farm in Meare. The last two are located close to Glastonbury, where the first Christian church in England was established, and near Bath, which has a story entangled with Jane Austin. Come enjoy a taste of a British feast, see the sights, hear the sounds and listen to the stories.

9/30-11/18, Wednesdays @ 9:00-10:30am
First American Title

Study Group Description: This year marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, arguably the most influential "science" book every written. Yet few have read it, and most people don't believe that humans developed from earlier species. Is evolution "just a theory?" Is it essential to understanding all aspects of our daily lives? What is being taught in our schools? Can "intelligent design" co-exist with evolution? This study group will explore these and other issues in a discussion format. Participants will read two delightful books (non-technical) on the subject (and a sampling from Darwin). A background in science is NOT required.

The notion of cutting off a pound of flesh is not only ugly, it is obscene. If Antonio and Shylock tried to draw such an agreement today, they'd be taken to the nearest mental hospital. The Al Pacino film is worthy of our attention.

Limits of Power, The End of American Exceptionalism

Rick Ernst (88rickernst@gmail.com)/David Bailey (baileyna@yahoo.com), Study Group Leaders
10/29-11/19, Thursdays @ 8:30-10:00am
Casa de Esperanza

Study Group Description: This study group will identify a profound triple crisis facing America today. The U.S. economy is in crisis and no longer can be fixed by relying on expansion abroad. The federal government has been transformed by an imperial presidency and is a democracy in form only. Our reliance on endless wars, which is driven by a deep infatuation with military power, has been a catastrophe for the body politic. These problems threaten us all. If we are to solve this predicament, we will need to revive a distinctly American approach: the neglected tradition of realism.

About the Study Group Leaders: Rick Ernst and David Bailey have been thinking about problems facing our country for a long time. In his book The Limits of Power, The End of American Exceptionalism, Andrew Bacevich was able to unlock some of their thinking, their assumptions and their conclusions. Rick also has led classes called UnSpun, Finding Facts in a World of Disinformation and Investing 101. He is president of OLLI/UA/Green Valley. David is author of the OLLI White Paper "Pinko Healthcare" and is a Marine dad.
